So today began with what I’m apparently told is a common occurrence in this weather known as ‘frozen pipes’ – let it go Aman, let it go – or as I like to call them, ‘cold pipes’. What happened was that the overnight cold had created the water inside the pipes to ice up which basically meant that we were out of water until the frost thawed.
Now my morning began at 5:30 am, so my first instinct was automatically to Google up the possible solutions as we all do whenever we want some aid with a difficulty. I was suggested by the various ‘experts’ to either call or a plumber or try to speed up the thawing process by using a blow-dryer on the ‘cold pipes’. Ideally, I should have done either of those things, but it was very early in the morning and I think my decision to going back to sleep may not have been my best one.
It was 9:00 am when I awoke for the second time and I immediately checked the sinks without any luck, so I rang up the plumber and guess what he said? Yeah, to wait out the day and apply heat to the pipes, and if things didn’t get better by the evening he would come by, yay!
My thoughts at this point were that this couldn’t be that bad, but turns out, it sort of was. You see when it’s -20 Celsius outside, you don’t really feel like getting out of the house and it turns out you need water for basically everything. Thus began a 10 hour water drought which got frustrating real quick, and my family’s anxiety didn’t help things either. At 3 pm we went and got ourselves some liters (and by some I mean 14) of water, and spent the rest of the afternoon waiting for the time to pass by. We had left our taps running, and when it turned 6ish and the sound of water gushing hit our ears, God, it felt good.
Even though it had been barely half a day, I had felt helpless in a way. I can’t imagine what the refugees and the homeless have to face every day, sigh. All I can say is that I am thankful; I am thankful for all the things I have
Not the very best day I have had, but then again, not my worst either. Would I do it again for the heck of it? Sure, as long as it 12 hours and ends with me getting hot chocolate.
